The Ordering of Chaos

Geometric and biomorphic patterns collide and commingle in this series of works, which explores the tension between order and chaos. At first, an inordinately complex picture confuses the eye. But soon the illusionistic plays of colour and shape coalesce and structures start to appear. In the midst of a dynamic picture, a static equilibrium is conjured up, an island of meaning within a vortex of information, order within disorder. The irresistible temptation to make sense of the chaos on the canvas echoes the tradition of Greek mythology in its attempt to explain away an unfathomable cosmos by reducing it down to the fate of Gods, heroes and monsters. Order, ineluctably, emerges from the seemingly chaotic substrate, a temporary victory over entropy.

The Fall of Icarus echoes the mythical tragedy of Icarus whose imprudence resulted in his untimely death. Equipped with wings fashioned by Icarus' father, Daedalus, from birds' feathers held together with wax, father and son set to escape the prison tower to which they were confined. Alas Icarus, filled with the exhilaration of the flight, eschews his father's warning to stay low and flies too close to the sun, whose intense heat melts the wax, destroying the wings and precipitating him into the sea. The work captures the fateful moment when a burning sun has irremediably damaged the wings and Icarus is plummeting down towards his death.

Where is the wisdom,
We have lost in knowledge.
Where is the knowledge,
We have lost in information?
